What is safeguarding?

Safeguarding is the action that is taken to promote the welfare of children and protect them from harm. Safeguarding means:

  • Protecting children from abuse and maltreatment.
  • Preventing harm to children’s health or development.
  • Ensuring children grow up with the provision of safe and effective care.
  • Taking action to enable all children and young people to have the best outcomes.

Child protection is part of the safeguarding process. It focuses on protecting individual children identified as suffering or likely to suffer significant harm. This includes child protection procedures which detail how to respond to concerns about a child.

Sudbourne's Safeguarding Statement

  • At Sudbourne Primary School we put the well-being and safety of our pupils and staff at the heart of what we do.  
  • We expect all staff, governors and volunteers to share this commitment to safeguarding our pupils.
  • We have a number of policies and procedures in place that contribute to our safeguarding commitment.  The most important policy is our Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy - see below.  
  • We listen to our pupils and take seriously what they tell us. All school staff are trained in Child Protection, and children are made aware of the adults they can talk to if they have any concerns. 
  • Staff are trained to look out for signs of harm or neglect and are required to report these to the school’s Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL).
  • The procedures which we follow have been laid down by Lambeth’s Safeguarding Team and Lambeth’s Safeguarding Children Board.
  • When there are concerns about a child's welfare we may need to share information and work in partnership with other agencies. We will ensure that our concerns about our pupils are discussed with parents/carers first, unless we have reason to believe that such a move would be contrary to the child's welfare.
  • We actively support the Government's Prevent Agenda to counter radicalism and extremism.
